“Lets Go Vertical, Upper Limits”

( Murrini and Flat Cane) with Matt Urban

Intermediate to advanced students.

Part I Nov 22-23

Because some types of cane we make are not round it is easier to get a consistent pull by using gravity and centrifical force. In this class the vertical pulling technique will be explained and demonstrated. We will generate different types of murrini (canes with a pattern in the cross section) and explain the advantages of, and, how to make flat cane (sometimes called ribbon cane). The pulling technique is very similar for the two types of cane but the application of the cane can be radically different. We will explore non-traditional cane shapes and patterns using traditional methods as a starting point. This class will focus on making cane only. GOAL: to understand vertical cane pulling and the reasons why this may be an appropriate way to solve your cane making dilemmas. (check out part II)

Part II Nov 29-30

In this class the roll up technique will be demonstrated for both Murrini and flat cane. We will utilize the canes and murrini that were made in Part I, the week before. This way we can focus solely on ways to roll up the murrini and flat cane in a clean and nice fashion. The roll up process especially with murrini can be a bit tricky at first but a few simple guidelines will keep you on the right track. This class will explain and demonstrate how to work exclusively with murrini as well as gathering over which are two completely different ways of working. You’ll be making stuff your mom will love and your friends think is cool. GOAL: to learn effective and predictable ways of rolling up murrini and flat cane. (check out part III ) to be announced pulling cane and infinite variety
